Synopsis: An English singer/songwriter meets a record producer in New York

Irish writer/director John Carney has made 7 films and worked in television, but nigh people know him for One time, the 2006 film most an Irish gaelic busker falling for a Czech immigrant in Dublin. It won a best-song Oscar for its stars, Glen Hansard and Markéta Irglová, and remains i of the most romantic movies ever, its beloved story given an added frisson by their real-life relationship off-screen.

Carney'southward latest isn't quite the equal of Once, simply who could have twice bottled that lightning? Comparisons aside, Brainstorm Once again is a beautiful story of love and longing told through music. If dancing is a vertical expression of a horizontal desire, these songs are the sonic representation of the eye's candescence.

Keira Knightley stars as Greta, whom we showtime meet in a small New York club when her friend Steve (James Corden) cajoles her onto the stage to play 1 of her songs, accompanying herself on guitar. The number, A Step You Tin't Take Back, is sweet but seemingly unremarkable, and almost of the order patrons half-ignore information technology equally they talk and drink. But 1 listener is entranced, and as the moving-picture show's chronology slowly loops the loop and returns to the club, we see (and hear!) why; he's not only listening to Greta, but imagining what she would sound like with ameliorate production values.

The inspired music lover is Dan (Marking Ruffalo), a record-company executive seemingly at the stop of his rope. He'due south just been let go from the label he helped found, and seems to be attempting the hopeless strategy of staving off an eventual hangover by staying boozer. (North.B.; this never works.)

Greta, we soon learn, is the lesser musician in a recently ruptured relationship. Her ex is Dave Kohl (Adam Levine, bravely playing a jerk), whose star is on the rise after some of his songs were used in a motion picture. (Shades of One time; art imitates fine art.) She came from London to New York with him, but is now contemplating going home alone. Dan sweet-talks her into staying on and putting together an anthology of songs, which he'll help produce and promote. Neither of them actually has anything else going on, so why not?

Of course she agrees, and most of Begin Again revolves around the recording sessions, which Dan and Greta decide will exist done al fresco, with the sounds of New York Urban center every bit a backdrop. The all-time of the bunch, however, is Like a Fool, which Greta writes equally a kind of breakup vocal to get out on Dave's voicemail.

Carney creates a naturalism that makes the whole thing feel so real that we're constantly scratched past the realization that information technology's only a motion-picture show. In Once (sorry; this volition be my last comparison) the characters were virtually unknown; hither it'due south Knightley and Ruffalo up on the screen, and we've seen them before. Ironically, in a lesser movie, this wouldn't be so much of a trouble, but Begin Over again is so powerful that the stars' wattage occasionally threatens to short out the story's natural energy.

But I'm praising with faint damnation. The motion-picture show'south music and narrative work in harmony, with the underlying romance – is it love, or merely lust, or a less tangible longing? – providing the perfect counterpoint. The original songs are lovely, with the added effect that we pay closer attention to all the tunes in the moving-picture show; a busker playing a trombone, for case, or even the canned music in a bar. The result is a treat for the ears and the middle.
